Some wheat producers may say, “It doesn’t matter how it works, as long as it works!” But for those of you who want to understand more – here goes.

Colorado wheat producers asked Colorado State University researchers for a new solution for controlling grassy weeds in wheat that were not only robbing yield but also reducing the quality of their yield. However, the answer wasn’t as simple as it may seem. First, we identified a cost-effective, broad spectrum herbicide that worked fast and effectively on crop debilitating annual and perennial grasses. Then, our scientists at CSU went to work to develop and characterize an ACCase herbicide-tolerance trait that could protect wheat varieties from this same grass herbicide. Their results provided the base of a new wheat production system that allows growers to produce more, higher quality wheat with less dockage and foreign matter. Just as important, CoAXium™ Wheat Production System is the only system today that has limited soil residual providing growers with greater crop rotation flexibility.

Plant. Spray. Profit. It’s that simple.

CoAXium™ Wheat Production System combines stewardshipelite varieties and a superior ACCase-inhibiting herbicide with a patented non-GMO herbicide tolerance trait to bring wheat growers worldwide the most innovative and comprehensive technology for producing wheat.  CoAXium™, created by wheat farmers for wheat farmers, provides cost-effective superior control of annual and perennial grasses, higher quality grain, increased yield and superior profit margins.

In 2018, protecting our Earth and its resources should be a priority for every individual in every industry. The developers of CoAXium™ Wheat Production System are actively focused on protecting the integrity of these new and farmer-demanded technologies.

To ensure success of CoAXium™ Wheat Production System, growers are required to use Certified Seed. The quality and genetic purity of Certified Seed assures farmers get maximum performance from inputs and ultimately the strongest, healthiest crop.

In addition to Certified Seed, farmers will also be required to adhere to the CoAXium™ Wheat Production System Grower Stewardship Agreement outlining strict policies on product rates, crop rotation best practices and product use limitations over time.

CoAXium™ Wheat Production System

  • CoAXium™ Wheat Production System is a non-GMO technology based on the new patented herbicide-tolerance trait for wheat – AXigen™
  • Axigen trait will be available in varieties from both private & public breeding programs
  • The first two CoAXium wheat varieties with the Axigen trait will be released to growers as Certified seed in the fall of 2018 by CWRF and Limagrain
  • Aggressor herbicides will provide excellent crop safety with broad spectrum grassy weed control including ALS (Group 2) resistant biotypes
  • Aggressor herbicides in the future will include broadleaf weed control solutions tailored to location production needs providing growers with a complete weed control tool
  • Wheat Growers and the entire ag industry will play a key role in the education, stewardship and long-term success of the CoAXium Wheat Production System
  • Aggressor herbicides will be registered by the EPA in the 4th Quarter of 2017
Background

Only Superior Varieties Are Part of CoAXium™ Wheat Production System

CoAXium Wheat Varieties

Currently, there are two varieties available for use with CoAXium™ Wheat Production System: Incline AX and LCS Fusion AX. These two varieties were selected for their superior performance in the field over time and in many different growing environments around the globe – elite varieties produce elite harvests.

Incline AX, marketed by PlainsGold™, contains AXigen™ trait and is resistant to Aggressor™™ herbicides. Incline AX was bred from Hatcher and Byrd parentage and has been tested across more than 40 locations in Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma and Nebraska. Incline AX is two days later than Denali, susceptible to stripe rust, shows intermediate reaction to Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus and yields similarly to Brawl CL Plus.

Also bred from Hatcher and Byrd, LCS Fusion AX is earlier than Incline AX by up to three days. It is one day earlier than Denali and three days later than Byrd. Plant height is medium – an inch taller than Incline AX and an inch shorter than Denali. Straw strength is medium and the variety is susceptible to Stripe Rust and Leaf Rust.

AXigen™ Trait: ACCase Herbicide Tolerance Trait

If you want to truly understand the power behind CoAXium™ Wheat Production System – think inside the seed.

AXigen™ trait is the science behind better wheat. After years of research, the resulting AXigen™ trait is an ACCase herbicide-tolerance trait that protects wheat varieties from Aggressor™ herbicide grass herbicide which provides superior control of target annual grassy weeds.

Varieties with AXigen™ trait (identified with the “AX” suffix) are being introduced in all wheat growing regions globally. These varieties are tested again and again with Aggressor™ herbicides to make absolutely certain that these two will work well together to provide both superior grassy weed control and variety protection.

Consistent Control of Damaging Grassy Weeds In Wheat

Aggressor™ herbicide, first and foremost, is performance you can count on. Field after field. Season after season. Aggressor™, the cornerstone of CoAXium™ Wheat Production System, offers tough, unmatchable solutions for the toughest weeds. They are Group 1 ACCase inhibiting herbicides that inhibit activity of the enzyme which means eradication of susceptible grassy weeds. Aggressor™ provides consistent, broad-spectrum control of problem grasses like: Bromus species, feral rye, jointed goatgrass, wild oats and volunteer cereals.

Used in conjunction with CoAXium™ varieties, Aggressor™ is a valuable new tool for consistent control of tough winter annual grassy weeds – including ALS-resistant biotypes. Aggressor™ herbicides will provide growers with a new mode-of-action, crop and chemical flexibility and consistent, broad-spectrum grassy weed control.

The world of wheat is about to change forever with CoAXium™ Wheat Production System. Wheat farmers asked for a solution and in the end, we delivered on a common goal: Cleaner fields and higher yields.

“This new technology was asked for and is owned by Colorado wheat farmers,” explains Mark Linnebur, president of CWRF and a farmer from Byers, Colorado. “Several years ago, the wheat producers of Colorado approached Colorado State University looking for a new solution to combat the grassy weed problems faced by Colorado wheat growers each year. Not only did it have to work better than what was commercially available, but it also had to be cost-effective. CoAxium Wheat Production System will deliver on that vision.”
